Paul Goodman

Paul was first elected to Parliament in June 2001 to represent the Wycombe constituency.

His top local campaigning priority since then has been the future of Wycombe Hospital – which despite some improvements is threatened with cuts and closures in its accident and emergency department, and in its maternity and children's services.

Paul helped to form the all-party Save Hospital Services Committee during the last Parliament which campaigned against these cuts – winning concessions from managers after protests from local anaesthetists. In 2005 he was named Health Parliamentarian of the Year by the Patients Association.

Before entering Parliament, he was Comment Editor of the Daily Telegraph, and worked on Telegraph Newspapers as a journalist during the previous ten years.

He is married to Fiona, a solicitor, and they have a three year old son, Daniel.

Paul 's Experience

After first being elected to Parliament in 2001, he served on the Select Committee on Work and Pensions and the Select Committee on Deregulation and Regulatory Reform.

He also served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Rt Hon David Davis MP until 2003. He was subsequently appointed first as a Shadow Minister for Work and Pensions, and then as Shadow Minister for Disabled People.

After the 2005 General Election, Paul was made Shadow Minister for Childcare and Shadow Economic Secretary in the Conservative Treasury team by David Cameron.

He has co-authored Healthy Choice for the Future, a pamphlet about health services, with Rt Hon John Redwood MP and Angela Watkinson MP.

Campaigns

As well fighting to keep open services at Wycombe Hospital, Paul is currently campaigning to ease road noise in the constituency; to improve local relations between different communities; to support local schools, and to ensure that the Government, and not local council tax payers, pays its fair share of the costs of local anti-terrorist operations.

He has a particular commitment to serve every constituent regardless of their creed, colour or political views, and has a special interest in trying to help those who suffer most from poor education, few job opportunities, inadequate healthcare and violent crime. Constituents are welcome to take up any matter with him at a surgery, and are welcome to phone 01494 521777 to find out further details.
