Homelessness

As a long-term volunteer for Wycombe Homeless Connection, Conservative candidate Steve Baker is relieved and glad that a majority Conservative Government will end the blight of rough sleeping by the end of the next Parliament.

We will expand successful pilots and programmes such as the Rough Sleeping Initiative and Housing First and work to bring together local services to meet the health and housing needs of people sleeping on the streets.

We will also commit to renewing the Affordable Homes Programme, in order to support the delivery of hundreds of thousands of affordable homes. This is a key part of our efforts to prevent people from falling into homelessness, along with fully enforcing the Homelessness Reduction Act.

Conservatives will bring forward a Social Housing White Paper which will set out further measures to empower tenants and support the continued supply of social homes. This will include measures to provide greater redress, better regulation and improve the quality of social housing.

A majority Conservative government will scrap Section 21 – ending the threat of ‘no fault’ evictions which can discourage tenants from raising concerns about their property for fear of being asked to leave. We will also ensure landlords can evict tenants when they need to, ensuring that renting works as it should for everyone.

Polly Neate, Shelter CEO, said that: ‘Shelter supports controls that lengthen tenancies and protect families from unfair rent rises but not old fashioned rent-setting which we think could end up harming the very people on low incomes they’re meant to help, if and when landlords sell their properties’, while left-wing campaign group Generation Rent warned Labour’s plans contain ‘pretty scary’ loopholes which could see vulnerable people evicted from their homes.
